Minneriya is home to one of the most spectacular wildlife events, the annual elephant gathering, during which hundreds of wild elephants congregate around the Minneriya Tank. This natural spectacle, set against a backdrop of ancient ruins and distant mountains, is unlike anything else in Asia. The park is also excellent for sambar deer, toque macaques, and a range of waterbirds.
